Why Should I Apply for Citizenship?
There are many different benefits (and responsibilities), once you are a legal U.S. citizen. For example, citizens have the right to vote and are able to sponsor family members to come to the U.S.
How Do I Become a U.S. Citizen?
In order to apply and be approved for citizenship, you must have no criminal history (in the recent past) and prove that you are of good moral character.
There are a number of different paths you can explore to become a U.S. citizen, including the following:
- Serving in the United States armed service - If you serve in the U.S. armed service, this is one of the fastest ways to be granted citizenship. The process can be streamlined in times of war and peace.
- Basic path to citizenship - If you are 18 years of age or older, can read, speak, write, and understand English, have a knowledge of U.S. government and history, and have been a lawful permanent resident for 5 years, you may be eligible to become a citizen.
- Marriage to a United States citizen - If you currently hold a green card and have lived in the U.S. for the past three years as a permanent resident, you may be eligible to pursue this path to receive citizenship.
Steps in the Naturalization Process
Many people begin their immigration journey with citizenship as their final goal. With the right knowledge, preparation, and guidance, you can become a citizen through a process called naturalization.
Here are the 5 steps to becoming a U.S. citizen.
- Assess your eligibility - To qualify for citizenship, you must first meet the eligibility requirements.
- File your naturalization application - To officially apply for citizenship, you will use Form N-400, Application for Naturalization.
- Attend your biometrics appointment - The biometrics appointment is a criminal background check. You will provide your signature, photograph, and fingerprints.
- Attend your interview - Once USCIS has processed your application and determined that you are preliminarily eligible, they will schedule an interview.
- Take the Oath of Allegiance - Once you complete this step, you will receive your Certificate of Naturalization and can enjoy the full benefits of citizenship.
